Throughout my life, people have said some incredibly cruel and odd things. I am sure this is true for most people, but I am always curious about what provokes people to say unfiltered, hurtful things.

I have been on the receiving end of some doozeys. Some of them made me want to cry. Others made me want to fight.

Strangely enough, I find value in all of them. Sometimes, I even find a bit of truth. The following statements are embedded in my memory forever, haunting and inspiring me at the same time to do better and to be better…

As if there isn’t enough to worry about right now.

For all the messaging about getting through this together, so many actions undermine those words.

For me, I’ve devoted the last two years trying to help people through the horrible experience of workplace bullying. As a survivor of someone who had their career destroyed by a sociopathic narcissistic boss, I know how devastating the experience is for so many people. To help others, I wrote a book about how I survived the experience. I thought I had dealt with my demon, and I would never have to face it again.

A few years ago, my job assignment was accompanying Angela Davis around my city.

Prior to her visit, I read extensively about her life’s work as a scholar and activist for equal rights. Inspired by her writings and speeches, I looked forward to meeting her. The Black Lives Matter movement had just begun at the time of her visit, and much of her visit was likely to focus on that call to action.

Ms. Davis did not disappoint. The crowds of people who came to meet her were in awe of her presence and her words. Gracious and thoughtful, we…

I have an abiding affection for caper movies.

The Sting, Ocean’s 11, 12, 13, and 8, To Catch a Thief, even The Great Muppet Caper are some of my favorite escapes.

The common thread in all of these movies is diverse group of characters gives a bully their comeuppance.

If only real life worked like a script plot.

For many adults, bullying happens in the workplace. Managers often become bullies for a variety of reasons. It can be their own insecurities that inspire their toxic behavior. Sometimes, it is the cumulative effect of a lifetime of abusive behavior they have…

2018 was the first time I ever worked on a political campaign.

A candidate for state senate need a communication professional on the team, and I signed on. Eager for the chance to have a new type of work experience, I thought I would learn something valuable. In fact, I learned lots of valuable things.

Running a political campaign was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It was also one of the smartest, because all that time and effort has paid off.

It’s not too late for you to get serious about spending some time in the…

I have a friend who is a professional wedding planner. She has helped people with their wedding events for over 20 years. Sometimes, I help out on the big weddings to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the happy couple.

My friend has a good record of predicting the longevity of the marriages just from the wedding planning experience. These are some of her observations for those who tend to stay married:

  • The groom is a real part of the planning, not a silent presence.
  • Both the bride and groom are respectful of each other’s ideas.
  • They want their wedding…

Since I was eight years old, I have studied the Holocaust.

My introduction began when I was in third grade and my teacher announced to the class that the mini-series The Holocaust was on TV. Always interested in pleasing my teacher, I went home and watched it.

I had nightmares for days after watching the mini-series. In those scary dreams I saw my parents wrapped in cellophane and taken to a gas station never to return. My eight year old brain struggled to comprehend this part of history. …

I love having a good side hustle.

It is an empowering, confidence-boosting phenomena that has completely changed how I view my life. It allows me to make choices that are positive for me.

My path to this point was launched out of despair and struggle. After a harrowing workplace bullying incident that left me without a job and depressed, I channeled my energy into building something brand new.

A year ago, I wrote about my first year of owning my own business.

A year later, I am happy to report that my business grew by approximately 30%. Yes, I realize…

“It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” — Rod Serling

On the night Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds military force, was killed by an United States airstrike in Baghdad, I was curled up on the couch watching an old episode of The Twilight Zone. …

Cold and flu season is underway.

Not all immune systems are up to the challenge. Some people sail through the winter months with little to no issues. Others seem to have a perpetual ailment.

When people who are sick are in the workplace, it puts everyone at risk for catching germs.

Sick leave is not always guaranteed with employment. Some states and municipalities have enacted paid sick leave laws, but still a large majority of the the United States workforce often loses money if they call in sick, or they simply work sick.

Beyond routine colds or bouts with the…
