The Hospice Bed

Her name was Carol.

The oldest of three girls, she was headstrong, outgoing, and full of charisma. She came of age in the 1950s. A model student, Carol made the decision to go to college and earn her teaching degree. She met a man 20 years older than her, and married him.

She was widowed by the time she was 35.

Carol focused on her teaching, her friends, and helping others. When she read about a man who was being released from prison, but who didn’t have shoes because his feet were too big, she tracked him down to send him her husband’s large shoes. The former prisoner and Judy became lifelong friends.

She taught classes, but soon moved to a role where she helped high school students get co-op jobs at local businesses. She hosted her weekly bridge club gatherings. Occasionally, went out on dates, but it was rare. She continued to golf in her golf league.

And that’s how she eventually met Mike.

Married to Mike

Mike was a bachelor in his late 40’s. An introvert, Mike stuck to a routine that included work, church, and golf. Outwardly, he was quietly curmudgeonly. Carol saw the real Mike through his gruff exterior: a kind soul who was lonely.

They hit it off right away. They were married a year and a half later when they were both…
