I don’t want to buy another gift for a boss.

Although it is not required, giving a present to the boss has become an expected part of workplace culture. Each year, there is an unspoken pressure to go along with the tradition of sucking up to the person in charge on Boss’s Day, their birthday, even around the holidays.

There were times I felt I had to buy presents for terrible bosses. Those times felt like pandering, and I always hated myself for feeling the pressure of trying to please someone who was difficult and unkind. I felt like I was paying a portion of a ransom in my own hostage situation.

As a manager, I’m unequally uncomfortable receiving gifts from my staff. I have nine employees that report to me. Every time they buy me a gift, I feel guilty about it. I don’t want them spending their hard-earned money on me.

This year, skip the generic gift, and give your boss something they will value and appreciate.

The Gift List

Give solutions.

One of the greatest things a team member can give is a possible solution to a problem. Issues in any industry are the norm, but finding a way through these annoyances is a win for everyone.

Give a damn.
