Cameron! I am so happy for you and your wife. Adoption is such a positive journey. What is absolutely true is that there is no such thing as a typical family any more. A group of people who love each other are family. I’m hopeful that you have a supportive community, and people will take joy in seeing children with caring, committed parents. My daughter goes to a public school that is mostly white, but there are black and hispanic children at the school. She has friends of all races, but there is still a tendency for kids to gravitate towards people who look like them. We have intentionally sought out opportunities for our daughter to interact at events that are about her culture, but also the culture of other races. We want her to have an understanding and appreciation for all. We were concerned that if we focused only on her race/culture that in many ways that would be “othering” her, so we include lots of traditions to from our own Czech/Irish backgrounds as well. Many blessings to you and your wife as your thoughtfully work through creating your family!
